Editorial by Rab Christie |
James Leatham first published 'The Gateway' Magazine in 1912. It went out monthly, with a few exceptions due to illness and war for the next 30 years. It cost 3d per copy or you could subscribe for 4 shillings for the whole year (delivered). The last printed issue was Number 362 of Volume 30, which covered the period January-August 1945 and reflects Leatham's failing health. Next month we will start the New Gateway, but we thought he'd appreciate us finishing the 1945 task... so today, 70 years after the last edition, we're offering a special Commemorative edition of Gateway to honour James Leatham's great contribution to free speech in publishing.

Seventy years ago Leatham was asking a question we all still want the answer to - 'Do banks MAKE money?' As Leatham's work teeters over the brink into the Public Domain we take a look at Copyright.

In 'The Best of Friends' Leatham gives us something to think about regarding our relationship with books.
Next MonthIn January 2016 we start the NEW Gateway from Volume 1 No 1.
We'll be publishing online on the 14th of each month. providing Leatham's thoughts on politics and culture and links to some interesting articles available from public domain sources as well as a bit of contexualising contemporary commentary. We hope you'll become a regular reader! |
Leatham's obituary as it was printed in the Turriff Advertiser in 1945 'Tact and Talent' is a short story by James Leatham - its an interesting observation on propagandists and an insight into his own view of the value of fiction.
